Chemical Peels

As we age, cellular turnover naturally slows down. This process describes the shedding of dead skin cells, and the replacement of those cells with younger skin cells. When your skin has lost its luster, it can make you look older or wearier than you feel. Symptoms of aging like fine lines and brown spots can also start to appear.

A chemical peel is an aesthetic treatment that enhances and smooths skin that has developed uneven tone and texture. Early aging signs like subtle lines and pigmentation irregularities can also be addressed with these procedures. The most common formulations incorporate chemicals such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and phenol. These substances are all FDA-approved for medical and cosmetic use. By using these specialized acid solutions to remove damaged, outermost skin layers, our Practitioner can effectively eradicate facial blemishes and skin discoloration while producing a more vibrant complexion.

The deeper peel you have, the more dramatic your results will be. However, deeper peels also require some downtime afterward, so you will need to plan to ensure you have some time off work and other activities to heal from your treatment.

Choices in Chemical Peels

There are three basic types of chemical peels:

“KIVA klassic” – light peel

This peel contains alpha hydroxy or beta hydroxy acids. Also known as superficial peel, these treatments can be performed on a lunch hour. After the procedure, you can head back to your daily routine without noticeable signs you just had a treatment performed. Improvements with a superficial peel are typically subtle, and the procedure needs to be repeated regularly to maintain your positive results.

"KIVA kanvas"- deep peel
“KIVA klassy” – medium peel

Trichloroacetic acid and glycolic acid are favorite ingredients in these peels, which are designed to remove a few more skin layers than light peels. Medium peels are usually recommended when additional correction is needed, and the skin won’t respond sufficiently to a superficial peel. Our practitioner will recommend a medium peel if you want to minimize the appearance of lines or brown spots, as the solutions tend to work deep enough to give you improvement of these concerns.

Deep peels often use phenol and TCA, a potent chemical that removes more layers of skin to produce dramatic improvements to the complexion. Deep peels are appropriate for more severe signs of aging and sun damage and produce results that can last for many years. These peels require an extended recovery process, which can be uncomfortable, but the outcome of these procedures is genuinely outstanding.

What to Expect from Your Chemical Peel

First, your skin is thoroughly cleansed, and numbing cream will be applied if necessary. The solution is applied to the skin and left on for a prescribed amount of time. At that time, a neutralizing agent will be used, and the peel is removed. You will be given a topical ointment to apply to the skin regularly after your treatment to support and sooth the skin during the healing process.

          After Your Chemical Peel

Recovery often depends on the type of chemical peel you have. Superficial peels usually don’t require any downtime, and you can head back to your daily activities right away. Deep peels will likely need multiple weeks for full recovery. Lighter peels reveal subtle improvements that show up over time, while deeper peels will produce more dramatic results.

After treatment, the skin may become red and swollen, which can last for up to one week. Bruising can accompany these symptoms, and the skin may be very tender to the touch. Our practitioner will provide specific instructions on how to care for your skin during the recovery process to promote healing and ensure an optimal outcome.

KIVA’s staff will recommend the right peel for you based on the concerns you have and the results you hope to achieve. You will need to commit sufficient time for recovery after your procedure, which can be significant after a deep peel. With so many variations to choose from, rest assured there is a peel that will be just right for you.

Microneedling / PRP

PRP microneedling is one of the most natural and effective methods of nonsurgical skin rejuvenation available today. In a series of treatment sessions, you will enjoy skin that is smoother, softer and more youthful. Aging symptoms like fine lines and brown spots will also be visibly diminished.

Microneedling is also called collagen induction therapy because the process triggers collagen production by the body. The device used for this procedure creates micro-channels in the dermal structure that jumpstart the skin’s healing function. In addition to increasing collagen levels, the treatment encourages the regeneration of new skin cells for a rejuvenated, more youthful appearance. The microneedling process is both quick and comfortable.

This treatment provides you with just the amount of correction you need – no more, no less. The needles are delivered via a small, pen-like or roller device that is smoothly run across the surface of the skin in the treatment area. Most patients head back to their routine as soon as they leave our office.

PRP

What is PRP? Our blood consists of two different components – red blood cells and plasma. The plasma is comprised of both white cells and platelets, which offer a variety of healing and restorative properties. Platelet-rich plasma or PRP is the plasma contained within the blood that is rich in growth factors that stimulate cell renewal to regenerate the treatment area and reverse the aging process in some respects. PRP is easy to obtain through a simple blood draw in our office. The collected blood is placed into a centrifuge that separates the plasma from the rest of the blood so that it can be used as a part of a microneedling treatment.

Once the plasma is prepared, it can be applied topically to the skin. The microneedling step in the procedure delivers the platelets deep into the dermal structure where they can provide the most significant benefit. While either of these treatments offers positive results alone, when they are combined, the outcome is even more dramatic and long-lasting.

Is PRP Microneedling right for you?

The skin rejuvenation procedure can be performed on a variety of skin types and conditions. Our happiest patients use this procedure to correct the following issues:

  • Scarring left behind from acne and surgery

  • Sun damage and pigmentation disorders

  • Early signs of aging, including subtle lines and skin laxity

  • Dull skin tone

  • Irregular skin texture

  • Stretch marks

            Hair Loss Treatment

PRP Microneedling is most frequently used to treat areas of the face. However, it is useful in treating aging symptoms around the neck and chest as well. In addition, injections of PRP are now used to restore hair in men and women experiencing thinning hair on the scalp. KIVA MedSpa offers this treatment as well and happy to talk with patients about how PRP can naturally stimulate the follicles to grow hair once again.

Treatment Overview

PRP microneedling is a multi-step process that involves the following:

  • Step 1: Practitioner draws a small bit of blood from your arm.

  • Step 2: Your blood will be placed into a centrifuge where it will be separated into platelet-rich plasma, platelet-poor plasma and red blood cells.

  • Step 3: The platelet-rich plasma is collected and applied topically to the skin.

  • Step 4: Microneedling is performed to stimulate the body’s regenerative processes and deliver the platelet-rich plasma deeper into the dermal structure.

All the steps of the process are performed in sequence during a single treatment session. You should not feel any pain during your procedure, thanks to topical numbing cream that is applied before the treatment. A gel is also placed onto the skin to allow the device to glide smoothly across the dermis. Treatment times vary somewhat depending on the size of the area you want to address but typically take well under an hour to complete. You will be able to walk out of our office and directly back to your daily routine.
